We were expecting it to be released in 2018, it has finally been deployed earlier, as Gary Illyes confirmed at the SMX East conference the 25th of October 2017.

Google’s mobile-first index is being deployed now. We were expecting the new index to be released in 2018, but the early rollout was confirmed by Gary Illyes at the SMX East conference on the 25th of October 2017.

We don’t yet how many websites have been impacted by this algorithm update. It appears that the complete release will take some time as Google seems to be cautious with the deployment.

How does Google decide which websites will be included in its mobile-first index?

Basically, Google will prioritise the websites that have a very similar content and code on their mobile and on their desktop versions. Responsive websites are more likely to be indexed first.

Are you in danger?

  • You’re not in danger if your website is 100% responsive.
  • You’re not in danger if your website has a mobile version on a subdomain or a specific folder. However, the mobile website will need to be optimised for the new mobile-index.
  • You’re not in danger if you don’t have any mobile or responsive website. However, you might have been living on a desert island during the last 10 years, which is pretty cool but not really good for your business.

3 facts to know about the mobile-first index release:

  1. A mobile website needs to include all the content that is displayed on the desktop version of the site. This is the single most important aspect in terms of SEO.
  2. Google will still index the desktop websites that don’t have any mobile versions, at least for a while (one or even two years).
  3. It is going to take a few months for Google to complete the deployment.
